This just share my experience, more than 5 months ago, I requested by a friend to build the infrastructure Blackberry Enterprise Server(BES) in a hospital which is quite popular in Jakarta. Because I do not know what their needs, I need to collect data to their site, what infrastructure is already available. In fact this hospital have not their own mail server, only mail hosting at internet provider , i think it's strange and even though connected to the internet does not have firewall. All doctors here already have BB (BlackBerry handsets), they use a version of BIS, as usernya already quite a lot (+ / - an 30-user) BB . The telco provider provide free installation and serial license of BES. This has become policy of this telco provider, if a user in the BIS is a company meet a certain quota, they will be given free license BES Software and Installation. However, because of lack of the infrastructure, BES can not be setup in this hospital. For such purpose I was invited to build the infrastructure for BES in here.
Finally I have to build a firewall, I select Endian Firewall, Unified Threat as a Management platform. Based on experience, efw firewall is the most easy to set up and maintain. And for the Mail server using Exchange Server 2007 SP1, I choose this because of its compatibility with the BlackBerry is quite mature. By using the Exchange 2007 because I have to build Active Directory, as usernya database. And the last is setup its BES.
The Platform used for the Operating System and Active Directory Mail Server using Windows Server 2008, Enterprise server Blacberry are using Windows SBS 2003. Unfortunately, BES was not supporting Windows Server 2008, which support is a version of Windows Server 2003.
One of the convenience of Windows Server 2008 is all the add-on packages or patches are available. So the need for Dotnet, add-on patches for Exchange Server does not need to download again, everything is provided. Different if we used Windows Server 2003, need to download dotnet, patches or install from the CD / DVD.
Installation of Firewall, Active Directory, Mail server and BES server requires approximately 6 times come to the site. The configuration and maintenance I run through the remote site. Here are some simple Firewall Architecture-AD-Exchange Server 2007 - BES:
The combination of windows linux and powerful enough. Because of the absence of anti-spam and antivirus on windows server, Exchange Server was attacked by spam and virus. Actually Exchange Server 2007 already provides anti-spam, but we need to install the Edge Server role that can be activated it's antispam. Therefore, the investment required hardware and OS license for it, Because of the limited budget of this hospital, then I give the solution of the anti-spam Endian Firewall, and powerful enough to block the spam into the Exchange Mail Server.
